Why buy British?

For some people, the answer to the question of “why buy British?” is obvious. It’s a matter of patriotism, sticking up for your own, and taking pride in this country. For them, it is not a question of “why buy British?”, it is “where can I buy British?” - in which case, you’ve come to the right place.

If on the other hand you don’t know how to answer the question, and wonder why it is so important, then I would say this:

Buying British is a matter of defending our identity, our values, and our place in the world.

We live in a rapidly shrinking world. Communications and the interconnectivity of world trade have given rise to a global economy. While it has certainly created opportunities, globalisation also puts pressure on businesses to outsource and move jobs overseas to cut costs.

Many economists celebrate globalisation, claiming that the market is producing more goods, more efficiently than ever before, but what they fail to to take into account is the human costs - the pain - associated with globalisation.

Economists know their economic models don’t take into account the pain because, of course, it is something you can’t put a price on. If an economist can’t put a price on something, they simply ignore it.

Economics ignores the impact of economic policies on real people. It ignores the labour conditions endured by workers in the Third World; it doesn’t put a price on manufacturing workers in the Midlands and elsewhere losing their jobs because work has been outsourced overseas; it doesn’t value the environment in countries that either don’t have environmental protection laws, or don’t enforce them; and it doesn’t assess the impact of CO2 generated by airplanes and ships which bring foreign goods to the UK.

Also, economics can’t put a price on National and Regional pride so, for an economist, “Made in Britain” has no value.

To real people - like you and me - Made in Britain means something very important indeed:

- ethical production, fair wages and decent working conditions

- taking responsibility for the environmental impact of our own consumption

- pride of ownership and pride in British capabilities

- the dignity of self reliance

- security of supply

- future prosperity (we have the THIRD WORST balance of payments defecit in the world)

- home grown opportunities for us and our children

Of course, buying British can be difficult. Be it food or manufactured goods, British producers have been in decline for a number of decades now, and with every year that passes, more British companies succumb to economic pressures overseas, making it that much more difficult to source British products / produce.

The only way to halt this spiral of decline is to make a positive decision to buy more British products. This website can help you find those products and companies that are British, enabling you to support the British economy.

British companies need us, and we need them. Strong British farming and manufacturing are vital if our society is to remain healthy and vibrant.

It these things are important to you, then you owe it to yourself to buy British whenever you can.

Support Britain, Buy British

Thank You
